An Open Letter to Phong H. Bui
According to the Wikipedia, Phong H. Bui “is an artist, writer, independent curator, and Co-Founder and Artistic Director of The Brooklyn Rail, a free monthly arts, culture, and politics journal.” The March 2026 issue of The Brooklyn Rail opens with a writing titled Dear Friends and Readers, to which I offer a ten-point retort in this open letter. All the oppressive and genocidal political movements used the discourse of giants to legitimize their atrocities. Before the Pilgrims and Puritans reached our side of the Atlantic, Nations had already been established here. To stop at openness to immigration as a bastion of morality is, in my belief, irresponsible. Further is necessary: absolute mobility. No one should be tied down to a plot of land or a physical address. Everyone deserves to be at home anywhere around the Globe. The same goes with religious freedom. More is needed.
